Introduction
I get many questions regarding crew setups. Like some of you I ask others in the game what works for them, I observe what others are doing to see if it will work for me, or I scour the web to see what others have said works. And, the information that I have acquired works pretty well. However, one question has always stuck in the back of my mind. That question is “Why?”. Why does this setup work and this one doesn’t? Sometimes the recommended setups work pretty well and sometimes other recommended setups worked better, but why? Finally, when someone asked me the same question and I didn’t have an answer, I resolved to figure out for myself the answer to the “Why?”.
Objectives
To answer this question, I will take several of the recommended crew setups, focusing mostly on the bridge officers, and run them through a series of tests. The tests will consist of either: a series of battles with specific hostiles which is called PVE (Player versus Enemy hostiles), a series of battles with other players which is called PVP (Player versus Player), a series of warp range examples, a series of Amalgam optimization examples, a series of cargo optimization examples, a series of cloaking optimization examples, etc. The results will then be published in a series of articles to document the findings.
Different tests will focus on different aspects of the game. For the tests, in regards to PVP and PVE, keep in mind that your research completed, ship tiers, ship levels, officer levels, certain building levels, etc. are important in regards to the level of hostiles and other players that you can beat. However, we will not focus as much on these items as you can determine for yourself the appropriate level of hostiles and players that you can beat once you understand the game mechanics. Instead, the testing will focus mainly on how different bridge officers affect the test results in order to better understand the underlying game mechanics. For the tests in regards to things such as cargo optimization, warp range, etc., we will highlight the research, ship tiers, ship levels, officer levels, certain building levels, etc. that are important to those respective tests.
As we work through this series of articles the test results might surprise you or they might confirm what you already know. Below is a list of proposed articles in no certain order. As these articles are completed these titles will become active links.
