Introduction
This is the first article in our series, “Maximizing Crew Setup” and this article’s focus is on Increasing Warp Range. In this article, I will take several of the recommended crew setups, focusing mostly on the bridge officers, and run them through a series of tests regarding warp range. Keep in mind that your research completed, ship tiers, ship levels, officer levels, certain building levels, etc. are important in regards to the outcomes of these tests. However, we will not focus as much on these items. Instead, the testing will focus mainly on how different bridge officers affect the test results in order to better understand the underlying game mechanics.
Objectives
The objective for the following series of tests is “Maximizing Your Warp Range.” There are two main areas where you can increase your warp range: research and specific officers with warp range bonuses.
Research
Here is a list of the research that is available that will affect warp range (See Figure 2). Click on the image to see a larger version.

The first is the Enhanced Warp Cores research, which will affect all ships. This research can be found in the Galaxy Research tree (Figure 3) and offers five different levels with a warp bonus of one, five, 10, 15, 20, and 25 (Figure 4) for each level respectively.

Figure 4: Enhanced Warp Cores research bonus details
The second research option to increase warp range is the USS Discovery Warp Range research, and, as the name implies, it only affects the USS Discovery. This research can be found in the Starships research tree. This research option has 10 different levels with increases to your USS Discovery warp range with warp bonuses from five to 145.
Officers:
There are currently three officers that offer a warp range bonus. They are Cadet Scotty, TOS Scotty, and Ghrush. Let’s examine the detail for each.
Cadet Scotty
First is Cadet Scotty or Cadet Montgomery Scott; and, he is most likely the first warp range boosting officer that you will receive. Don’t be confused by the different names. When you look at this officer in your main officer list or when choosing a crew for your ship he will appear as Cadet Scotty due to space constraints. When you view the officer detail page his name will appear as Cadet Montgomery Scott.
Cadet Scotty’s Officer Ability is a Warp Distance increase based upon his rank as you can see in Figure 6. At the lowest rank he will increase the warp range of the ship he is on by one when he is placed on the bridge. At his max rank he will increase the warp range of the ship he is on by five when he is placed on the bridge. Since this is an officer ability it is not increased by synergy.

TOS Scotty
Next is TOS Scotty or TOS Montgomery Scott. Again, don’t be confused by the different names. When you look at this officer in your main officer list or when choosing a crew for your ship he will appear as TOS Scotty due to space constraints. When you view the officer detail page his name will appear as TOS Montgomery Scott.
TOS Scotty’s Captain Ability is a Warp Distance increase when is the Captain of an Explorer type ship as you can see in Figure 8. His rank will not affect the bonus as the bonus is the same for each rank. Since this is a Captain ability it can be increased by synergy (Figure 8).
Note: TOS Scotty’s Captain Ability only works when he is the Captain of an Explorer type ship.

Ghrush
The last warp boosting officer is Ghrush; and, he is most likely the last warp range boosting officer that you will obtain. He is obtained through the syndicate and will usually take some time to acquire and level up.
Ghrush’s Officer Ability is a Warp Distance increase based upon his rank as you can see in Figure 10. At the lowest rank he will increase the warp range of the ship he is on by 6% when he is placed on the bridge. At his max rank he will increase the warp range of the ship he is on by 15% when he is placed on the bridge. Since this is an officer ability it is not increased by synergy.
Note: Grush’s Officer Ability is added after all other warp bonuses are calculated.

Test Parameters
Ship: USS Discovery
Base Warp Range at Tier 9 = 30
Research:
Enhanced Warp Cores at Level 3 = 15
USS Discovery Warp Range at Level 8 = 95
USS Discovery Total Warp Range:
Base Warp Range at Tier 9
+ Enhanced Warp Cores at Level 3
+ USS Discovery Warp Range at Level 8
= USS Discovery Total Warp Range
30 + 15 + 95 = 140
USS Discovery Total Warp Range is 140.
Officer: Cadet Scotty
Cadet Scotty at Commander V rank = +5 Warp Range
Using TOS Kirk for Synergy = +3 Bonus to Cadet Scotty’s Captain Ability
Officer: TOS Scotty
TOS Scotty as Captain of an Explorer type ship = +4 Warp Range
Officer: Ghrush
Ghrush at Level 10 = 8% warp range increase
Test Results
Test #1:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + Ghrush [8%] = 151.2
Detail:
140 + 8% = 151.2 (rounded to 151)
Warp range = 151
Test #2:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + TOS Scotty (Cpt) [4] = 144
Detail:
140 + 4 = 144
Warp range = 144
Test #3:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + Cadet Scotty [5] = 145
Detail:
140 + 5 = 145
Warp range = 145
Test #4:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + TOS Scotty (Cpt) [4] + TOS Kirk Synergy [3] = 147
Detail:
140 + 4 + 3 = 147
Warp range = 147
Test #5:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + TOS Scotty (Cpt) [4] + Cadet Scotty [5] = 149
Detail:
140 + 4 + 5 = 149
Warp range = 149
Test #6:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + TOS Scotty (Cpt) [4] + TOS Kirk Synergy [3] + Cadet Scotty [5] = 152
Detail:
140 + 4 + 3 + 5 = 152
Warp range = 152
Test #7:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + TOS Scotty (Cpt) [4] + TOS Kirk Synergy [3] + Ghrush [8%] = 158.76
Note: Ghrush's warp bonus is applied after the other warp bonuses are calculated.
Detail:
(140 + 4 + 3) + 8%
(147) + 8% = 158.76 (rounded to 159)
Warp range = 159
Test #8:
USS Discovery Total Warp Range [140] + TOS Scotty (Cpt) [4] + Cadet Scotty [5] + Ghrush [8%] = 160.92
Note: Ghrush's warp bonus is applied after the other warp bonuses are calculated.
Detail:
(140 + 4 + 5) + 8%
(149) + 8% = 160.92 (rounded to 161)
Warp range = 161
Test Summary
As you can see from the test results there are many ways to combine these officers for different effects. It will depend on your ship, ship level, ship type, research completed, officer availability, officer synergy, and officer level as to what warp ranges you can achieve. However, as you can see from the test results, regardless of your research, but dependent upon officer levels, the best combination of officers on an Explorer type ship is TOS Scotty as Captain with Cadet Scotty and Ghrush as supporting officers on the bridge.
