Introduction
This is the next article in our series, “Maximizing Crew Setup” and this article’s focus is on Increasing Cargo Protection. In this article, I will take several of the recommended crew setups, focusing mostly on the bridge officers, and run them through a series of tests regarding cargo protection. Keep in mind that your research completed, choice of ship, ship tiers, ship levels, officer levels, certain building levels, Syndicate XP level, etc. are important in regards to the outcomes of these tests. However, we will not focus as much on these items. Instead, the testing will focus mainly on how different bridge officers affect the test results in order to better understand the underlying game mechanics.
Objectives
The objective for the following series of tests is “Increasing Cargo Protection.” There are four main areas where you can increase your cargo protection on a given ship: research, buildings, Syndicate XP level, and specific officers with cargo protection bonuses.
Research
Here is a list of the research that is available that will affect cargo protection (See Figure 2). Click on the image to see a larger version.
Figure 2: Research - Cargo Protection (Graphic sourced from CmdrBond's Research Analysis Tool)
Notice that each research option will affect specific ships. Some research affects all survey ships while others only affect specific faction survey ships. In addition, some research affects all faction ships from a particular faction. Lastly, some research only affects specific ships such as the Botany Bay, D’vor, Meridian, and Mantis.
Buildings
There is currently one building that offers a cargo protection bonus; and it is the Treasury building. The Treasury offers cargo protection bonuses from 2% at level 1 to 120% at level 60. In Figure 3 you can see the bonuses for the Treasury at level 46.
Figure 3: Treasury Building at level 46 (Source: stfc.space)
Syndicate XP Level
There are currently three Syndicate XP levels that offer a cargo protection bonus. They are:
● Level 07 = +10% Protected Cargo
● Level 11 = +15% Protected Cargo
● Level 12 = +25% Protected Cargo
Note: The percentage increase for cargo protection is based on Ops level. The amounts listed above are based on an Ops level of 52.
Officers
There are currently eight officers that offer a cargo protection bonus and one officer that offers a reduction in cargo protection. They are Dupont, T'Pring, One Of Eleven, Three Of Eleven, Joaquin, Quark, Reginald Barclay, Ghrush, and Fess. Let’s examine the details for each.
Raphaël DuPont
The first officer is Raphaël DuPont; and, he is most likely one of the first cargo protection boosting officers that you will receive. DuPont’s Officer Ability is a Cargo Protection increase based upon his rank as you can see in Figure 4. At the lowest rank he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 50% when he is placed on the bridge. At his max rank he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 300% when he is placed on the bridge. Since this is an officer ability it is not increased by synergy. (See Figure 4).
Figure 4: DuPont's Officer Ability (Source: stfc.space)
T’Pring
The next officer is T’Pring; and, she is also of the first cargo protection boosting officers that you will receive. T’Pring’s Officer Ability is a Cargo Protection increase based upon her rank as you can see in Figure 5. At the lowest rank she will increase the cargo protection of the ship she is on by 50% when she is placed on the bridge. At her max rank she will increase the cargo protection of the ship she is on by 300% when she is placed on the bridge. Since this is an officer ability it is not increased by synergy. (See Figure 5).
Figure 5: T’Pring 's Officer Ability (Source: stfc.space)
One of Eleven
The next officer is One of Eleven; and, he is one of the Unimatrix Twelve officer group. One of Eleven’s Officer Ability is a Cargo Protection increase based upon his rank as you can see in Figure 6. At the lowest rank he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 30% when he is placed on the bridge. At his max rank he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 50% when he is placed on the bridge. Since this is an officer ability it is not increased by synergy. (See Figure 6).
Figure 6: One of Eleven's Officer Ability (Source: stfc.space)
Three of Eleven
The next officer is Three of Eleven; and, she is one of the Unimatrix Twelve officer group. Three of Eleven’s Officer Ability is a Cargo Protection increase based upon her rank as you can see in Figure 7. At the lowest rank she will increase the cargo protection of the ship she is on by 300% when she is placed on the bridge. At her max rank she will increase the cargo protection of the ship she is on by 500% when she is placed on the bridge. Since this is an officer ability it is not increased by synergy. (See Figure 7).
Figure 7: Three of Eleven's Officer Ability (Source: stfc.space)
Joaquin
The next officer is Joaquin; and, he is one of the Khan’s Crew officer group. Joaquin’s Captain’s Maneuver is a Cargo Protection increase as you can see in Figure 8. Since this is a Captain’s Maneuver it is increased by synergy and not by rank as you can see in Figure 8. Without any synergy he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 50% when he is placed on the bridge in the captain position. At max synergy he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 100% (See Figure 8).
Note: Joaquin has to be in the captain position with a Science and Engineering officer from the Khan’s Crew officer group to achieve max synergy.
Figure 8: Joaquin's Captain’s Maneuver (Source: stfc.space)
Quark
The next officer is Quark; and, he is one of the Ferengi Conglomerate officer group. Quark’s Captain’s Maneuver is a Cargo Protection increase as you can see in Figure 9. Since this is a Captain’s Maneuver it is increased by synergy and not by rank as you can see in Figure 9. Without any synergy he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 50% when he is placed on the bridge in the captain position. At max synergy he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 100% (See Figure 9).
Note: Quark has to be in the captain position with a Science and Engineering officer from the Ferengi Conglomerate officer group to achieve max synergy.
Figure 9: Quark's Captain’s Maneuver (Source: stfc.space)
Reginald Barclay
The next officer is Reginald Barclay. Reginald Barclay’s Below Decks Ability is a Cargo Protection increase based upon his rank as you can see in Figure 10. At the lowest rank he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 30% when he is placed in a below-decks slot on a ship. At his max rank he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 100% when he is placed in a below-decks slot on a ship. Since this is a Below Decks Ability it is not increased by synergy. (See Figure 10).
Note: Reginald Barclay’s Below Decks Ability only works when he is placed in a below-decks slot on a ship.
Figure 10: Reginald Barclay’s Below Decks Ability (Source: stfc.space)
Ghrush
The next officer is Ghrush; and, he is one of the Syndicate officer group. Ghrush’s Captain’s Maneuver is a Cargo Protection increase. Since this is a Captain’s Maneuver it is increased by synergy and not by rank as you can see in Figure 11. Without any synergy he will increase the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 100% when he is placed on the bridge in the captain position. At max synergy he will increase the cargo capacity of the ship he is on by 200% (See Figure 11).
Note: Ghrush has to be in the captain position with a Science and Engineering officer from the Syndicate officer group to achieve max synergy.
Note: Currently there is only one other officer available from the Syndicate officer group; therefore, it is currently impossible to achieve max synergy.
Note: Due to the current unavailability of the other Syndicate Officer (Mavery), due to him being behind a paywall/grind wall, he was not utilized in this testing.
Figure 11: Ghrush’s Captain’s Maneuver (Source: stfc.space)
Fess
The last officer is Fess; and, he is one of the Ferengi Conglomerate officer group. Fess is unique among the officers in this testing in that his Officer Ability is NOT a Cargo Protection increase like the others but instead his ability is a Reduction in protected cargo. This ability is based upon his rank as you can see in Figure 12. At the lowest rank he will Reduce the cargo protection of the ship he is on by 30% when he is placed on the bridge. And, another unique feature is that at his max rank he will Reduce the cargo protection of the ship he is on by only 10% when he is placed on the bridge. Therefore, the amount of Reduction in protected cargo goes down as his rank increases. Since this is an officer ability it is not increased by synergy. (See Figure 12).
Note: Fess’s Officer Ability is a Reduction in protected cargo.
Note: The amount of Reduction in protected cargo goes down as his rank increases.

Test Summary
As you can see from the test results there are many ways to combine these officers for different cargo protection effects. Remember that it will depend on your research completed, choice of ship, ship tiers, ship levels, officer levels, officer synergy, certain building levels, Syndicate XP level, etc. as to what cargo protection levels you can achieve. Below is a summary of the test results. Click on the image to see a larger version.
Figure 14: Cargo Protection Test Summary Results
As you can see from the test results, regardless of your research, but dependent upon officer levels, the best combination of available officers for cargo protection at the officer levels utilized in this test is Ghrush as Captain with T’Pring and Three of Eleven as supporting officers on the bridge and Reginald Barclay below decks. However, even if all of the officers utilized in this test were at max level the best combination of officers would still be the same.
